Skateboarding and decent gear imput.?
My 10 year old son is taking up skating. He started out on a generic board and I now feel he has earned to upgrade. I know of decent brands and those that are built well. But I need to hear from the skaters out there and tell me what brands of Trucks, wheels, bearings and mainboard are your favs. What is the popular editions going. Is it lame to buy a pre-bulit? Ive been interested in the Birdhouse brand but is Tony Hawk still cool? lmao Im so out of the loop and just take an interest in what my kids are into. Im looking to get him a decent board that will not embarrass him yet i dont want to fall into the “marketing” trap and take what i see on web sites to be the truth. Thanks for any imput!
If you feel your son deserves an upgrade and if he;s been skating for a while get his input of what to buy, nobodies going to know what he needs more than the person who’ll be using it. Pre builts are okay but you are limited to their parts and there’s always better trucks and bearings out there than what a pre built will give you.
Probably one of the trickest parts of a board to buy for someone else is the deck, this is where i’d let him pick it out or if you’re trying to surprise him see what he thinks is cool but keep it low key so he doesn’t suspect anything. Being he’s 10 and probably doesn’t weigh very much a 7.5-7.75 deck will be the right size. For trucks you can never go wrong with independants, tehy’re super strong and will outlast any otehr truck out there, little on the heavy side for most skaters and beginners so go with venture superlights, krux, grind kings, or tensors, which are all very good and popular trucks, well built. for wheels I don;t know I just use blanks any brand is good they’ve all been the same for me, size and hardness is what’ll matter, a beginner shouldn’t be so picky any wheel size from 52-54mm is a good starting out size. For brands ritca, bones, spitfire, pig are all great brands. For bearings I’d go with bones reds, they’re not super fast which a beginner doesn’t need but they’re fast enough and great bearings will last a long time. I’ve skated on so many decks brands that none really are bad…but there are lots that are way better, blind, plan b, almost, mini logo, zero, enjoi, baker have all been great decks and i’d use them again. Shop around online and a really nice desent custom built skateboard can cost $100-$130, plus if he puts it together himself it may feel better to know he built it, I recomend having someone else do the grip tape deck though, that can be tricky and if you want it perfect let someone else do it unless he really wants to, who ever you buy the deck from, buy grip tape from them also and they’ll probably put it on for free. mob is a great grip tape brand, stay away from the colored stuff it doesn’t last as long. A little jug of bearing lube can go a long ways also and keep his bearings going smooth, don;t just get a can of wd-40 that’ll make the bearings worse, it leaves a residue that collects dust and dirt. with all this said you have a big job ahead of you, get some input from the youngster and it may make it a lot easier.
Tony Hawk will forever be cool so don’t you worry about that
